1. DETERMINE TO SERVE (LUKE 9:51 – 10:42)
· Chapter 9:
· Verses 51 – 56 Jesus was refused hospitality in Samaria because He was going to Jerusalem.
· Verses 57 – 62 Jesus spells out the cost of following Him.
· Chapter 10:
· Verses 1 – 12 Jesus sent out seventy disciples who were to prepare the way for His ministry.
· Verses 13 – 16 Woes are pronounced on those who do not receive Christ.
· Verses 17 – 20 The return of the seventy.
· Verses 21 – 24 Jesus rejoices and gives thanks to God.
1A. FOLLOW THE SCRIPTURE (LUKE 10:25 – 28)
25 And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"
A " lawyer" referred to one that was an expert in the law of God.
26 And He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?"
· In Jesus asking a question in response to the question He was asked is an occasion to call attention that the Word of God was provided to the lawyer, AND TO US, in written form, and is thus available for us to read with understanding and to show, by implication, that Jesus was not teaching a new doctrine, but was strictly adhering to the holy law of God as documented in the O.T.
27 And he answered and said, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." 28 And He said to him, "You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live."
NASB
1B. LISTEN TO JESUS (LUKE 10:29 – 35)
29 But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
· Matthew Henry said, "Many ask good questions with a design rather to justify themselves than to inform themselves, rather proudly to show what is good in them than humbly to see what is bad in them."
30 Jesus replied and said, "A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho; and he fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went off leaving him half dead. 31 "And by chance a certain priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 "And likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 "But a certain Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, 34 and came to him, and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 "And on the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return, I will repay you.'
NASB
1C. SHOW COMPASSION (LUKE 10:36 – 37)
Luke 10:36-37
36 "Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers' hands?" 37 And he said, "The one who showed mercy toward him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and do the same."
NASB
· I have read that in the time Of Christ, the Jews would not sentence another Jew to death for killing a Gentile, for a Gentile was not a neighbor of the Jews.
· Further, if a Jew saw a Gentile "in danger of death", the Jews considered themselves under no obligation to help, for the Gentile were not "neighbors" of the Jews.
· The first time that the word "compassion" is used in the Bible was in reference to a NON-JEW HAVING COMPASSION ON A JEW.
o Do you remember the two people involved?
Exodus 2:5-6
5 Then the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the Nile, with her maidens walking alongside the Nile; and she saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid, and she brought it to her.
6 When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the boy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, "This is one of the Hebrews' children.
NASB
“So she had compassion on him,” KJV
“she felt sorry for him.” NIV
· Note, such perfection as required by Jesus, " Go and do the same", on this side of sinful earth is not possible for anyone with the fallen nature of Adam.
· Yet, the demand of God's law is not put aside because of our own weaknesses.
· The solution of this dilemma has been furnished by our Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the substitutionary sacrifice of Himself and by His life of perfect obedience, has done for us what we ourselves could not do and never will be able to do.
· Therefore:
- We must sincerely confess that it is forever impossible for us, by our own action, to fulfill the demands of God's law:
Galatians 2:16
16 nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified.
NASB
· We must, by God's grace and the power of the Holy Spirit, place our trust in Christ Jesus.
John 3:36
36 "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."
NASB
· Out of gratitude for the salvation which, because of Christ's merits, we have received as a free gift, we must now, guided and empowered by the Holy Spirit, live a life to the glory of God Triune.
· This means that even though while on earth we cannot love God and the neighbor perfectly, yet in principle, we will begin to live in accordance with His law.
2. PRAY AS JESUS TAUGHT (LUKE 11:1 – 13)
Luke 11:1-2
And it came about that while He was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples." NASB
· Verses 1 – 4 Jesus Teaches His Disciples to Pray.
· This disciple was not just asking HOW to pray -- he wanted to pray like Christ prayed.
· It is still a good idea to ask the Lord to teach us to pray.

· Verses 33 – 36 The Light of the Body - Parable of the Lighted Candle.

· They disregard justice and the love of God
· They love recognition
· They are as dead men inside
· They weigh men down with heavy burdens
· They implicitly approve of the murders of the prophets
· They have lost true knowledge and hinder others from finding it

· Verses 4 – 7 Jesus tells us not to fear because God cares.

· Verse 10 It was the ministry of Jesus as the Son of Man to forgive.

· It was not the ministry of the Holy Spirit, and be careful what you say about Jesus as the Son of God.
· Verses 11 – 12 We see part of what the ministry of the Holy Spirit is.
