CHRISTIANITY 102: LIVE TO BENEFIT OTHERS

4/1/2012

1.     TEACHING THAT GUIDES (LUKE 6:12-49)

  • V.12-16           Jesus Chooses the Twelve.
  • V.17-19           Jesus' Power to Heal.
  • V.20-23           Jesus Gives a Sermon on the Plain - Four Beatitudes.
  • V.24-26           Four Woes. (The rich, The full, Those who laugh now, When men speak well of        you.
  • V.27-38           The Standard of Life Demanded by the King - The Light of Love Demanded.
 1A. WITH LOVE (LUKE 6:27-29, 35-36)
27 "But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

·         It must be kept in mind that Christ consistently and frequently insisted that the righteousness of those who would follow Him MUST exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees.
·         He made it clear the vast difference which separated one from the other.

29 "Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him either
NASB

·         What He IS refuting is the taking of PRIVATE vengeance on those who wrong us.
·         We should not resist or oppose an evildoer with measures that arise from an unloving, unforgiving, unrelenting, vindictive disposition.
·         Once this is understood it become clear that "turning the other cheek" means to show in attitude, word, and deed that one is not filled with the spirit or revenge, but with the spirit of love.

35 "But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men. 36 "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful
NASB

·         Jesus is teaching us to imitate the Father in showing mercy to others.
·         Of course, it takes special grace (obtained by prayer and practice) to obey this command.

1B. WITH UNSELFISHNESS (LUKE 6:30-34)
30 "Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back.

·         Lending is to be done with discernment.
·         Certainly we should be helpful to those who are in need.
·         There should be fruit of good works in a believer's life.

Psalms 112:5
5 A good man deals graciously and lends;
He will guide his affairs with discretion.        NKJV

2 Thessalonians 3:10-11
10 For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone will not work, neither let him eat.
NASB

31 "And just as you want people to treat you, treat them in the same way. 32 "And if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 "And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 "And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, in order to receive back the same amount.
NASB

·         Do we not all feel that we woefully fall short of its requirements, that we must confess that we are guilty of not following it, that we are utterly undone, and that without the grace of God, we are truly lost.

1C. WITH CONCERN (LUKE 6:37-38, 41-42)
37 "And do not judge and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned.

·         This should warn us against coming to any hasty conclusions.
·         As with all Scripture, we should pray for the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit that we may know the Truth and then to apply it to our lives.
·         Since we cannot read what is in the mind of others, as Jesus was able to do, our judgment must be more reserved and can never be final.
·         However, there is nothing in the teaching of Christ or of the apostles that relieves us of the obligation to form opinions about people around us and to act upon the basis of those opinions.

Matthew 7:15-17
15 "Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 "You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles, are they? 17 "Even so, every good tree bears good fruit; but the bad tree bears bad fruit.
NASB

38 "Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, they will pour into your lap. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return."
NASB

41 "And why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 "Or how can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye.
NASB

·         After dealing with this issue yourself then you will be more understanding and compassionate in helping other with their speck.

1D. WITH OBEDIENCE (LUKE 6:46-48)
46 "And why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? 47 "Everyone who comes to Me, and hears My words, and acts upon them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation upon the rock; and when a flood rose, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built
NASB

·         Whatever honor people bestow on Jesus when they call Him, "Lord, Lord," they dishonor Him when they do not obey His commandments.
·         This is the message we have in the Sermon on the Plain; it compliments the Sermon on the Mount.
·         Most likely it is a message the Lord gave many times to many different groups of people.
·         It follows that he who hears and does our Lord's sayings is a wise man, and that he who hears them and does not do them is a fool.
·         They who think they are saved by trusting the blood of Christ while disregarding His commands
·         In this passage a contrast is drawn between talkers and doers.
·         In the briefest of terms, the takers are those who profess faith but fail to put faith into action in their lives.
·         The doers are those who both say and do what is pleasing to God.
·         With these words our Lord makes know His demand for REALITY.
·         He makes it crystal clear that deeds or works count for NOTHING where personal godliness is lacking.

2.     HELP THAT IS TIMELY (LUKE 7:1-17)

·         V.1-10       The Faith of a Centurion Rewarded by Jesus.
·         V.11-17     The Raising of the Widow's Son at Nain.
·         In the gospel record He is unimpressed by everything that impresses us.
·         Position, power, wealth, talent, and human achievement impressed Him not at all.
·         The only thing that impressed Him was the presence or absence of faith.
·         On two occasions we are told that Jesus marveled with surprise.
·         He marveled at the absence of faith where we would have expected it to be present.
·         Yet in the unlikely person of a pagan military soldier He marveled at the presence of faith where we would expect it to be absent.

3.     FAITH THAT SAVES (LUKE 7:18-8:3)

  • V.18-35 The Death of John the Baptist.
  • Although every word that John said about the coming of the Lord was inspired, and therefore true, it may well be that John had failed to discern that his prophecies would not go into fulfillment until the second coming of Christ - he may have not seen the present and the future in perspective.
Luke 7:35
"Yet wisdom is vindicated by all her children."
NASB

·         Wisdom's children are all those who are wise enough to take to heart the message of John and of Jesus.
·         The problem is not with preachers or teachers.
·         The problem is with the spoiled baby who complains.

Proverbs 9:10-11
10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
11 For by me your days will be multiplied,
And years of life will be added to you.
NASB

·         V.36-50     Jesus Anointed by a Penitent Woman and The Parable of the Two Debtors.
·         C.8 V.1-3  Ministering Women.

4.     STORIES THAT ENLIGHTEN (LUKE 8:4-21)

·         V.4-8         The Parable of the Sower.
·         V.9-10       The Purpose of the Parable.
·         V.11-15     Explanation of the Parable of the Sower.
·         V.16-18     Various Sayings of Jesus.
·         V.19-21     The Mother and the Brothers of Jesus.

Luke 8:19-21
19 And His mother and brothers came to Him, and they were unable to get to Him because of the crowd. 20 And it was reported to Him, "Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wishing to see You." 21 But He answered and said to them, "My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it."
NASB

5.     DEEDS THAT AMAZE (LUKE 8:22-56)

V.22-25           Christ Jesus Stills the Storm.
V.26-39           In the Land of Gergesenes.
V.40-56           The restoration to life of Jairus' daughter and the healing of the woman who touched Christ’s garment.
